Around the Moronosphere 7/31/2011

I have started compiling these the day before and so I check the calendar and look at the date and type it in.  Of course I have been off by a day.  That’s why there is a skip.

Around the Moronosphere 7/29/2011

Belmont Club- It’s for the children.  HR 1981 mandates ISPs log and retain every click your mouse makes.  Sounds like all but 3 of the Republicans on the committee voted yes.  It passed 19-10.

More - The U.S. House Judiciary Committee approved a bill Thursday that would require Internet service providers to keep a record of their customers’ web activity for 12 months.

A late rewrite of the bill reportedly requires ISPs to store customers’ names, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers and temporarily assigned IP addresses for 1 year.  The panel rejected an amendment clarifying that only IP addresses be retained by a 7 to 16 vote.

Never mind, now that I have read a little more about it I’m sure there is no way this data could be misused.  (that was sarcasm if you weren't sure)

(Note:  I went to THOMAS and read the bill all it says is that ISPs have to keep temporarily assigned IP addresses on file for 18 months.  Not sure where the original reports information originated from)

NY Times“The Age of Greed” was written by an idiot.  Considering it’s the NY Times and the book in question is criticizing conservatives and conservative philosophy this review is a polite but savage beatdown.

Around the Moronosphere

In an attempt to avoid studying I am revising “Around the Moronosphere” .  This is installment one:

Slashdot:  "The BBC is reporting that the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit, target of 'ClimateGate,' has released nearly all its remaining data on temperature measurements following a freedom of information bid.

First comment: “Demanding these heroes of the people show their work. What's next, letting actual statisticians vet their modeling?

<runs in terror>”

The Art of Manliness: A Young Man’s Guide to Understanding Retirement Accounts: The 401(k)

Considering they have a pose contest on this site you may question the title but they do occassionally have good information.  Another good article “Arming yourself for the zombie apocalypse:  How to build the ultimate survival shotgun”

Belmont ClubBritain disbanding more battalions and regiments.

The Jawa Report:  Breaking: U.S. Military Serviceman Arrested in Alleged Attack on Fort Hood

Apparently not a repeat from last year.  Not seeing it reported anywhere else and Fox News is down.

This Ain’t HellMilitary retirement system on the chopping blocks?

LA TimesA stealth political campaign hiding it’s donors behind a social welfare designation.  Any bets who one of the major funders will be *cough* George Soros *cough*

Sydney Morning Herald:  With all the data Google collects about us and our search histories, could the company use its technical prowess to help catch terrorists and mass murderers before they commit crimes?

That thought is more than a little scary.  I don’t want maniacs running around killing 65+ kids but I sure as hell don’t want Google sitting in judgment of me either.

Seattle Times:  Arguments start in the NLRB case against Boeing today

Oh Noooooes! San Francisco isn’t going to be able to vote on interfering in yet one more private aspect of our lives

July 28 (Bloomberg) -- A measure that would ban circumcision in San Francisco should be removed from the November ballot because it attempts to regulate a medical procedure, a California judge said in a tentative ruling.

Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi in San Francisco said yesterday in the preliminary ruling that it would serve no legitimate purpose to allow an invalid measure to remain on the ballot. Giorgi said that the measure is prohibited by California's Business and Professions Code.

It’s hard to believe that a California Judge could actually exercise some restraint and keep the state from interfering in the citizen’s lives once again but it happened.  She must be on the payroll of big circumcision and the international Jewish conspiracy.

Speaking of California stupidity, this time from further south, I watched Operation: Endgame last night.  I had never heard of the movie before but talk about an hour and a half of Bush Bashing (and not in the good porno way).  Just avoid it if you see it pop up in your cable listings.

Back in town

I know I didn’t tell anyone I was leaving but that’s the nice part about having no readers – No one to disappoint.

I spent the last week down in Oregon with my family, it was a pretty good time but towards the end I was a little tired of the constant bickering with the kids.

Found out my sister has been appointed to the Idaho Commission on Nursing.  I don’t know how or why, she isn’t a nurse and has never worked in a nursing or nursing education position so I am guessing she is like some sort of lay member like on church committees or something.  Anyway she is excited about it and it should be a big opportunity for her.

The other big news of the week is that my sister-in-law is leaving Afghanistan.  She is supposed to be home sometime in the first week of August.

So that’s all the family news.  Other than that all I did was read some on Windows 7, read a little of “A Dance with Dragons”, and basically sit around doing a bunch of nothing.

Feel like helping some people out?

The warehouse that houses Pierce County (WA) Toys for Tots was damaged in a fire today.  It contained approximately 25,000 toys, or about half of what are normally distributed in any given year.  Efforts were made to protect the inventory from water and smoke, but at this point they aren’t sure how much will be salvageable.  If you have a couple extra bucks and you want to donate to a worthy cause I suggest sending a check to Pierce County Toys for Tots • 6824 19th Street W #139 • University Place, WA 98466.  (The director of Pierce County Toys for Tots is Det. Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriffs Dept. If you want to do something other than cash I am sure they would love to hear from you)

Just as a point of interest this is the same warehouse that was used to house about 300,000 pounds of relief materials for Japanese earthquake victims.  Those materials were shipped out about 2 weeks ago.
