Good News and Other Stuff 3/19/13

LA TimesThe Supreme Court Upheld the First Sale Doctrine When Applied to Copyrighted Works Purchased Abroad

The Supreme Court gave foreign buyers of books, video discs and other copyrighted works a right to resell them in the U.S. without permission of the copyright owner, giving discount retailers a victory and the entertainment industry a setback.

The entertainment industry wanted a ruling that would have made it virtually impossible to resell any copyrighted work that you had purchased.  Thankfully they were slapped down.

but wait there’s more good news

Washington Post - Assault weapons ban dropped from gun bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid on Tuesday declared politically dead the effort to ban military-style assault weapons, a setback for President Obama and gun-control advocates who are pushing the Senate to move quickly on bills to limit gun violence.

I don’t want to give the libs too many ideas but if they really wanted to slow the purcahse of these weapons what they should do is say, “Sure you can have on as long as you participate as a member of a state or federally sanctioned organized militia, at your own cost, and subject to the UCMJ”  That would drive interest down.

Ars TechnicaThe Keeper of the Coyrights (sounds better than her real title) wants to shorten copyright terms

"You may want to consider alleviating some of the pressure and gridlock brought about by the long copyright term for example, by reverting works to the public domain after a period of life plus fifty years unless heirs or successors register their interests with the Copyright Office," Pallante's written testimony states.

Still longer than they should be in my opinion, but it’s a start.
