Udacity

A former Stanford professor / Google Fellow and a University of Virginia professor have teamed up to prove that a high quality computer science education can be provided at low cost.  So far the offerings are CS 101 (build a search engine) and CS 373 (build a robot car) but scheduled to come on line this year are

  • Theory of Computation
  • Operating Systems
  • Computer Networks
  • Distributed Systems
  • Computer Security
  • Algorithms and Data Structures
  • Software Engineering Practices
  • Building Web Apps

Throw in some database classes and calculus and u have a fairly complete program.  For comparison the UW computer science program has 7 core classes:

  • Programming 1 (CS 101)
  • Programming 2
  • Foundations of Computing (Theory of Computation)
  • Foundations II (Algorithms and Data Structures ?)
  • Software Design and Implementation (Software Engineering Practices)
  • Programming Abstractions (A & DS ?)
  • Hardware / Software Interface

Not a perfect match but fairly good.
