Biden chosen as Obama's VP pick after an extensive vetting process

Mr. Biden’s stock rose through one of the most rigorous vice-presidential vetting processes that Democrats could recall. It was a process in which Mr. Obama applied intense secrecy, careful pragmatism and political input from a team of internal and external advisers that have guided his campaign from the start. And it ended Thursday with a phone call from Mr. Obama, who reached Mr. Biden as he was at a dentist’s office where he had taken his wife to have a root canal.

My first question is what did they do in the past? Open a phone book and randomly choose a name?

Second question, didn't the Obama campaign announce early in the week the decision had been made and would be announced sometime between Wednesday and Saturday? This article implies that was either a lie or Biden wasn't the first choice. )or that the NY Times has the timetable wrong, always a possibility)

My bet is a lie. Obama wants to seem more in control than he is.
