News War – A Frontline Special Part 2

I watched part two of “News War” last night and was not nearly as impressed as I was with part one.

Last night’s episode dealt with the controversy surrounding the revelation of the NSA Terrorist Surveillance Program, The SWIFT Money Transfer Monitoring Program, and the “Secret Prisons” by the New York Times and the Washington Post. The impression I took from the program was that it was undoubtedly a good thing that these programs had been revealed and no one should consider otherwise. I also found Bill Keller to be an insufferably smug jerk.

The other major theme of the show was all about how the White House had declared war on journalists and this was horrible because it undermines the foundations of our government. In a way I agree – A free press is necessary to the functioning of our democracy. But the press needs to understand there are consequences to actions and the need to accept the responsibilities that come with their privileges. That is my major complaint. That also goes for whistleblowers.
