To say that I was less than popular in high school would be something of an understatement. It's not that I didn't have friends, I did, a fairly large number in fact. It's that I didn't fit in with the mainstream crowd, my friends were all very interested in the military and most were planning on joining immediately after high school. In the post Vietnam 70's and very early 80's that was less than popular. On top of that while not exactly shy I didn't have a lot to say to most of the people there. That combined to make me something of a social pariah. Oddly enough I didn't really care except for a fairly short period in 8th or 9th grade.
Anyway I didn't really have much to do with the more popular girls in my class, the girls I hung out with tended to be a couple of classes ahead of me and a little weird sometimes, even though I had known most of them literally all my life, I think that I said maybe a dozen words to any given one of them in 12 years. A couple of years ago I decided that I would start getting in touch with people I had known at various points in my life. I e-mailed different people and for the most part the response I received was "F*** Off", but a couple of surprises occurred. One was one of the girls I was talking about above, I was surprised she even remembered who I was much less that she was getting in contact. Anyway now we play a little e-mail tag, occasionally get together for coffee etc. in high school I would have rated the chances of that at about 0%.
