Online Gaming

Online Gaming

I have mentioned before that I used to be involved in an online gaming group.  Using a program called Open RPG we would play a couple different Role Playing Games on Sundays.  I know, “What the hell is a 41 year old doing playing RPGs?”.  Mainly it was just a way to kill some time with some mindless entertainment, plus spend some time chatting with friends.

Anyway the game broke up last May and I have not been invited to participate in the follow on sessions.  No biggie, except I have some game system ideas I want to try out, and I think a pretty good idea for an ongoing adventure.

One of the ideas I have been toying with is a hidden talents roll.  I think this could be a really cool idea in that it could totally change the course of a game just by the GM placing a character in the situation that the hidden talent comes into play.

An example might be a wimpy character who is always hiding during the fighting and is constantly picked on by the other characters.  Suddenly he is forced into a situation where he has to pick up a dagger/knife/gun and fight and he is good at it. Really good.  In game terms maybe he is fighting at two levels above his own.  Maybe it suddenly turns out he can whip the ass of every one else.  How does that affect party dynamics? Stuff like that.

The really cool thing is the GM can  hold it in reserve until it will really mess with everyone too.
