Amazon.com: Books: The Fate of Africa: From the Hopes of Freedom to the Heart of Despair

Listened to an interview with the author on the Michael Medved show yesterday. The tone of the interview was rather strange. The author continually blamed the majority of Africa's problems on mismanagement, first by the colonial governments then by the following post independence governments. He was very critical of the colonial governments. I believe he even referred to the way Africa was colonized and administered as criminal. A characterization I basically agree with. Now the strange part at least twice and possibly more times people would call and accuse him of whitewashing the effect of European (and American) governments . In one segment a caller from L.A. called up and said "Now I know why everyone loves Raymond, but everyone hates Chris" He then accused the author of trying to blame all of Africa's problems on Patrice Lumumba. The author had just finished talking about how horrible colonial management, especially in places like Zaire (former Belgian Congo) by King Leopold had basically set the stage for failure. Over all the author came off as very knowledgeable and fair, I think I will read this book, that is if I can ever finish Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol. Holy Crap that guy is out in way left field.
