What I'm Reading 4/19/2020 - Ransomware, Violation of Workers Rights and IEC 61850 Woo Hoo!

Reuters - U.S. stay-at-home frustration spreads; coronavirus-battered New York says may be past the worst -
Demonstrations to demand an end to stay-at-home measures that have pummelled the U.S. economy spread to Texas on Saturday as the governor at the epicentre of the U.S. coronavirus crisis said his state of New York may finally be past the worst.
Al Jazeera -  Can US stimulus funding help shift to clean energy? -
One idea floating around Washington to jump-start the economy in a post-coronavirus world includes funding for a massive infrastructure renewal project. If this were to come about, would US legislators consider aggressively replacing the current electric grid with renewable sources?
The White House and Senate Republicans pushed back on an attempt to include clean energy funding in the $2.2 trillion stimulus package passed last month.
Al Jazeera -  What would and should a post-pandemic world look like? -
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a general feeling that the world is at an historical turning point, that nothing will ever be the same again.
The realists ponder and the (neo)liberals bemoan the comeback of the strong state, the rise of nationalism, the ascendance of China at the expense of America, as well as the failure of global governance, the retreat of globalisation, and increasing divisions within "united Europe".
Cognizant, a multibillion-dollar IT services company with clients in the banking and oil and gas industries, said Saturday its computer systems had been disrupted by Maze ransomware, a strain of malicious code that has been used in cyberattacks in the U.S. and Europe in recent months.
Buzzfeed - The NLRB Is Looking Into Claims That Amazon Violated Employees' Rights During The Coronavirus Pandemic -
Federal labor regulators have indicated that they will be watching Amazon after workers in Chicago filed charges against the company alleging it retaliated against them for participating in protests about working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic, according to public documents filed this week.
The labor board’s inquiry, which experts say is unusual, comes as Amazon is under national scrutiny for firing at least four employees who engaged in walkouts and work slowdowns to protest worker safety during the pandemic.

Wikipedia - IEC 81850
IEC 61850 is an international standard defining communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations. It is a part of the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) Technical Committee 57[1] reference architecture for electric power systems. The abstract data models defined in IEC 61850 can be mapped to a number of protocols. Current mappings in the standard are to MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification), GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event), SMV (Sampled Measured Values),[clarification needed] and soon to Web Services. These protocols can run over TCP/IP networks or substation LANs using high speed switched Ethernet to obtain the necessary response times below four milliseconds for protective relaying.
...
IEC 61850 features include:
  1. Data Modeling — Primary process objects as well as protection and control functionality in the substation is modelled into different standard logical nodes which can be grouped under different logical devices. There are logical nodes for data/functions related to the logical device (LLN0) and physical device (LPHD).
  1. Reporting Schemes — There are various reporting schemes (BRCB & URCB) for reporting data from server through a server-client relationship which can be triggered based on pre-defined trigger conditions.
  1. Fast Transfer of eventsGeneric Substation Events (GSE) are defined for fast transfer of event data for a peer-to-peer communication mode. This is again subdivided into GOOSE & GSSE.
  1. Setting Groups — The setting group control Blocks (SGCB) are defined to handle the setting groups so that user can switch to any active group according to the requirement.
  1. Sampled Data Transfer — Schemes are also defined to handle transfer of sampled values using Sampled Value Control blocks (SVCB)
  1. Commands — Various command types are also supported by IEC 61850 which include direct & select before operate (SBO) commands with normal and enhanced securities.
  1. Data StorageSubstation Configuration Language (SCL) is defined for complete storage of configured data of the substation in a specific format.

IEC 61850 kind of sprawls so look at some other videos but this was a pretty good short summary.

I am going to keep posting these little summaries until I have covered the following protocols:
Modbus (covered)
DNP3 (covered)
HART (covered)
Fieldbus (covered)
Ethernet/IP / Common Industrial Protocol (covered)
IEC 61850
Siemens S7Comms
BACNet
Profibus
Profinet
