QUESTIONS FOR OBAMA’S SCIENCE TEAM. I wonder about this one myself: “What do they plan to do to invigorate the country’s innovation pipeline, from the classroom to the lab to the boardroom?”
Seriously - We as a country seem to have entered an anti-intellectual trend. I know that isn't an original observation, but it is driven home by the fact that Obama's nominee foe Secretary of Education heads (or headed) a school district where only 19% of students perform at or above grade level, and that is considered a success wort emulating. Further every effort to strengthen standards or improve performance is opposed by a coalition of teachers unions and (self)interest groups as is the case with California's recent decision to require algebra in the 8th grade and passing an algebra test for high school graduation.
That isn't the only problem. Every time there is a budget crisis in a state among the first areas cut is education. Talk about counterproductive.
Add this together and really what can be done to improve the innovation pipeline?
