Bigger Role for the State Department?

The New York Times reports that Hillary Clinton is seeking a wider role for the State Department in setting foreign policy.

In the blogging circles where I hang out I may be a lonely voice on this one, but I say good. The State Department should be the lead agency in setting foreign policy. The military should be there to carry out policy when diplomacy fails.

That said the State Department needs close supervision, because, paraphrasing the Naval Officer's Creed regarding enlisted men, Diplomats are stupid but cunning and bear watching at all times. Mainly to insure that all the commie infiltrators don't manage to sign away all our sovereignty to the UN.
