Google’s Penguin 2.1 was rolled out on Friday 10/4/13 . Google reports that this update affected 1% of searches – yet many webmasters are reporting a widespread, global reshuffling of search results.
And according to this article these shuffled search results are causing businesses to lose revenue because they have essentially lost their advertising or businesses that come out on the winning end of the reshuffle are unable to fulfill orders and then they lose the sale and lose revenue. This lost revenue has the potential to cause the businesses to downsize, which then has cascading effects, i.e. lost jobs, lost tax revenue, etc.
Seems like a bit of a doomsday scenario, especially since the update in question happened in October 2013, to me but I guess stranger things have happened.
