The internets is mean

Today on Boing Boing - Oh Noes, the internet is mean

2013 seems to have been a good year for games, but a bad one for gamers: a blur of angry adolescent guys reminding women just who is the boss in game culture. Wu recounts a number of the year's worst examples, and they're surprisingly grotesque.
I was curious so I went and read Wu's article and I didn't find her examples that bad.  Yeah there was a lot of immaturity but nothing heartstoppingly grotesque as Boing Boing implies.  Basically it's people shouting at each other thru the internet, and frankly the author isn't blameless here.  She starts the article butthurt because some guys disagree with her opinion of a game and because they disagree with her they must be misogynists. That's not argument it's bullcrap.

I am not going to deny that there are a lot of places on the internet where women are treated like shit but I find it rather amusing that this is the one place that Boing Boing potentially finds censorship appropriate.
"But publishers have a responsibility, too. Websites that let people comment on game reviews are a big part of the problem: much of this year's nastiness was facilitated by websites which chose to publish relentless, sexist attacks on their own authors."

They're freaking comments, that's it, rude yes but not physically harmful, and let's be honest unless you are a major public figure death threats on the internet are probably nothing more than a 12 year old trying to act tough. Getting bent out of shape by them is ridiculous.
