Around the Moronosphere in 60 Minutes 5/1/09

Flopping Aces - IRS Says that Obama Tax Cut…Well, You’re Gonna Be Giving It Back - "WASHINGTON – Millions of Americans enjoying their small windfall from President Barack Obama’s “Making Work Pay” tax credit are in for an unpleasant surprise next spring. The government is going to want some of that money back."

Not to worry, with the new Turbo Tax Geitner button you can just ignore the withholding tables and pay what you want. (Available to potential Democratic cabinet members only

Hot Air - Irish Central takes umbrage with the idea that Winston Churchill stands as a beacon of light in the battle against the use of torture - President Barack Obama's grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama, must be turning over in his grave.

Winston Churchill — the man who ordered his torture during the Kenyan war of independence — was being praised by his grandson for not using torture. What a laugh.

It was just a couple weeks ago that the speculation was that Obama had returned a bust of Churchill to Britain and snubbed Gordon Brown because of the torture of his grandfather. Just goes to show President Obama is nothing if not inconsistent.

Just One Minute - The War against the War on Terror continues - ABC News reported on the role of psychologists Bruce Jessen and Jim Mitchell in developing the CIA enhanced interrogation program. The always interesting Michael Goldfarb and the invaluable Gateway Pundit describe this as ABC having "outed" these two.

Will this be afforded the same outrage as the Valerie Plame "outing"?

The Art of Manliness - Lessons From The Greatest Generation

Bring the Heat Bring the Stupid - Old School Ordinance - I doubt you would see a training film like this anymore, and it's 10 minutes of Nazi abuse.

My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy - And the other shoe drops - "So, while you were all busy saying “good riddence” to Arlen Specter, the wheels of fate were in motion to kick us in the ass once more. In specific, the news is now reporting that Justice David Souter will be retiring from the Supreme Court. Now, had we not been total fuckwits with Specter, we might have been in a position to filibuster the next Ruth Bader Ginsburg clone that the Dems will put up for the court. "

Actually that is exactly wrong. If we had gotten our crap together and pulled behind the McCain/Palin ticket and Souter had resigned we would be in the position of having a more conservative justice appointed. Specter would have voted with the Dems in any case so his defection doesn't matter

Nice Deb - Do You Feel Safer? - "Why did I have to read this latest bit of news from Jed Babbin at Human Events?: "Moving quickly to release Chinese Uighur terrorists into the United States, Obama administration officials have — for the second time — overridden objections of federal agencies responsible for national security."

Maybe because you don't read my blog! Here on 4/25/09 I wrote about the administration planning on release Chinese Uighars in the US. I even used the public assistance line too. I also sent the tip to Instapundit and Ace as well as 3 or 4 other blogs and none of them found it worth posting about.

The Other McCain - Of Hope and Hubris - Less than six months after the 2008 election, and just past the 100-day mark of Barack Obama's presidency, liberals have begun congratulating themselves on the triumph of their ideas.

To be fair I think that in a similar position the GOP would take the same attitude. The difference is we would be right and the Dems are just wrong.

Other Stuff:

BBC - Tehran Get's It Way. Israel Eliminated - "British airline BMI has apologised after in-flight maps on its London-Tel Aviv service did not identify Israel.

The moving maps marked Islamic holy sites but showed only the city of Haifa in Israel, identified by its Arabic name, Khefa.

Israeli officials accused BMI of trying to "hide the existence of Israel".

Next on the Iranian agenda getting the maps published in Farsi

CNN - Dozen of Taliban Killed in Pakistani Crackdown - ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's military killed at least 55 militants over the past 24 hours as part of its week-long crackdown on Taliban militants, an army spokesman said Friday.

So many X down Y left to go jokes here brain is going into spasm

DAWN - Next two weeks critical for Pakistan govt: Petraeus - "WASHINGTON: If militants are not defeated within the next two weeks, the Pakistani government may collapse, warned the top American general.

...

Sources say General Petraeus and senior administration officials believe the Pakistani army is more powerful than the civilian government led by President Zardari, and could conceivably survive even if Zardari’s government fails to topple the Taliban."

The question is whose side would it be on

Washington Post - Abu Ghraib Guards Say Memos Show They Were Scapegoats - "When the photos of detainee abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq surfaced in 2004, U.S. officials portrayed Army Pvt. Charles A. Graner Jr. as the ringleader of a few low-ranking "bad apples" who illegally put naked Iraqi detainees in painful positions, shackled them to cell doors with women's underwear on their heads and menaced them with military dogs.

Now, the recent release of Justice Department memos authorizing the use of harsh interrogation techniques has given Graner and other soldiers new reason to argue that they were made scapegoats for policies approved at high levels. They also contend that the government's refusal to acknowledge those polices when Graner and others were tried undermined their legal defenses."

I have always maintained the the real culprits in this were the NCOs and SNCOs who didn't maintain control of their troops. If as the Army maintained the treatment of the Abu Gharib prisoners was unsanctioned then the NCOs should have put a stop to it. IF it was then they should have gotten something in writing. A standing order or written a Memorandum for the Record to cover their people.

Fox News - Former Miss Norway Disses Beauty Pageants, Drinks Guys Under Tables -

France 24 - Up to 100 Guantanamo Bay Inmates Can't Be Tried or Released - "AFP - US officials planning the closure of Guantanamo prison are weighing the cases of about 50 to 100 detainees who cannot be tried or released, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday.

"The question is what do we do with the 50 to 100 -- probably in that ballpark -- who we cannot release and cannot try," Gates told a Senate hearing."
