Proposal for better math education

Last week the National Mathematics Advisory Panel released their report on improving math education in the US.

Their recommendations in a nutshell - Kids need to memorize multiplication tables, they need to be comfortable working with fractions and algebra is highly important and should be emphasized through a concentration on the basic skills.

I can't say I disagree I am just surprised that these recommendations are controversial enough that it required a national commission to come up with them.
