And this is why we need the WASL - 25% of 10th-graders get held-back notice

25% of 10th-graders get held-back notice

In Washington state there has been a lot of controversy lately about the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) test. This year it became mandatory that 10th graders pass the test in order to graduate. If they failed they could take the portion they failed up to 4 more times (5 total). The test measures skills at the 8th grade level.

Well of course there was an uproar when a substantial number of kids started failing the test a couple years ago, and politicians being what they are passed laws this year that completely gutted the test. L

On the other hand look at how Seattle responded when it became obvious there was a problem. They identified kids at risk and came up with a solution. It may not be one everyone likes, I know when I first read about this yesterday I thought it was BS, but it helps accomplish what the WASL is supposed to be about. Helping make sure the kids get a quality education.

My question is would they have taken this step without the WASL threat? Given the fact that they hadn't until the WASL became mandatory I would say No.
